Vinter-OL 1972 var de 11. olympiske vinterlege og blev arrangeret i Sapporo i Japan.
Sovjetunionen blev største nation med 8 guldmedaljer. OL var på det tidspunkt kun for amatører. Sovjetiske og andre østbloklandes atleter var dog semiprofessionelle, da de fx var ansat som soldater til at træne ishockey. Det fik Canada til at boykotte ishockey-turneringen[1][2].Den hollandske skøjteløber Ard Schenk tog medalje i de tre længste distancer.
