The Parting Glass
"The Parting Glass" er en traditionel skotsk folkesang, der ofte bliver sunget som den sidste ved sociale begivenheder.[1][2][3][4][5][6] Den er også blevet sunget i Irland, hvor den har oplevet stor popularitet, og som også har haft indflydelse på, hvordan den bliver sunget.[3][4] Det var angiveligt den mest populære afskedssang, der blev sunger i Skotland inden Robert Burns skrev "Auld Lang Syne".[1][6]
Tekst
Teksten variere lidt, men lyder generelt som følger:
- Of all the money that e'er I had
- I spent it in good company
- And all the harm I've ever done
- Alas it was to none but me
- And all I've done for want of wit
- To mem'ry now I can't recall
- So fill to me the parting glass
- Good night and joy be to you all
- I spent it in good company
- So fill to me the parting glass
- And drink a health whate’er befall,
- And gently rise and softly call
- Good night and joy be to you all
- And drink a health whate’er befall,
- Of all the comrades that e'er I had
- They're sorry for my going away
- And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
- They'd wish me one more day to stay
- But since it falls unto my lot
- That I should rise and you should not
- I gently rise and softly call
- Good night and joy be to you all
- They're sorry for my going away
- If I had money enough to spend
- And leisure time to sit awhile
- There is a fair maid in this town
- That sorely has my heart beguiled.
- Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips
- I own she has my heart in thrall
- Then fill to me the parting glass
- Good night and joy be with you all.
- And leisure time to sit awhile
- A man may drink and not be drunk
- A man may fight and not be slain
- A man may court a pretty girl
- And perhaps be welcomed back again
- But since it has so ought to be
- By a time to rise and a time to fall
- Come fill to me the parting glass
- Good night and joy be with you all
- Good night and joy be with you all
- A man may fight and not be slain
