Turneringsformat

Konkurrencen blev afviklet med indledende heats, semifinaler og finale. Efter de indledende heats gik de 16 bedste tider videre til semifinalerne, hvor det blev afgjort hvilke otte tider, der var de bedste. Disse gik til finalen, hvor medaljerne blev fordelt.
