Sudirman Cup
Sudirman Cup er verdensmesterskabet i badminton for landshold bestående af både mænd og kvinder. Mesterskabet er afholdt hvert andet år siden 1989, hvor det blev afviklet i Bung Karno Stadium i Jakarta, Indonesien. Turneringen er opkaldt efter Dick Sudirman, en tidligere indonesisk badmintonspiller, grundlægger af og mangeårig formand for det indonesiske badmintonforbund (Bulutangkis Seluruh Indonesia) samt bestyrelsesmedlem og vicepræsident for International Badminton Federation.
Sudirman Cup blev til og med 2001 afviklet i forbindelse med det individuelle VM i badminton, men siden 2003 er mesterskabet afviklet som en helt separat turnering med en selvstændig termin på den internationale badmintonkalender. Turneringen afgøres i form af holdkampe, der består af fem enkeltkampe: en herresingle-, en damesingle-, en herredouble, en damedouble- og en mixed double-kamp.
Der er ingen pengepræmier i Sudirman Cup. Dvs. at spillerne udelukkende spiller for deres lands ære og point til BWF's verdensrangliste.
Kina har vundet mesterskabet ti gange, Sydkorea tre gange og Indonesien en enkelt gang. Danmarks bedste placeringer er andenpladserne i 1999 på hjemmebane og 2011 i Kina, og derudover har det danske hold ni gange nået semifinalerne.
Format
Der er ingen kvalifikationsturnering til Sudirman Cup. De deltagende hold bliver niveauinddelt baseret på deres tidligere resultater. Det er kun de 12 hold i det øverste niveau, der har chancen for at vinde selve Sudirman Cup-pokalen, mens holdene på de øvrige niveauer spiller om op- og nedrykning mellem niveauerne.
Pokal
Selve Sudirman Cup-pokalen er 80 cm høj. Den er lavet af rent sølv, belagt med 22 karat guld, og den står på en ottekantet sokkel af jatitræ. Selve pokalen er formet som en fjerbold, hvorpå der står en kopi af Borobudur-templet.
Pokalen blev fremstillet af Masterix Bandung Company og har kostet $ 15.000.
