Sejlsport har været en del af det olympiske program siden de første lege, sommer-OL 1896 i Athen. Dog blev der ikke gennemført nogen sejlads under sommer-OL 1896, da konkurrencen blev aflyst på grund af dårligt vejr. Ved sommer-OL 1904 var sejlsport ikke på programmet, men ellers har sejlsport været en del af samtlige efterfølgende olympiske lege. Fra 1900 og frem til og med 1984 var alle klasser åben for begge køn og der deltog jævnligt damer i de forskellige klasser. Fra sommer-OL 1988 i Seoul blev der indført klasser for damer og gradvist forsvandt klasserne, der var åbne for begge køn. Nu om dage konkurreres der i klasser for herrer, damer og mixed mandskaber, hvor det er et krav, at begge køn er repræsenteret[1].

Flag of Canada introduced in 1965, using Pantone colors. This design replaced the Canadian Red Ensign design.
Flag of Portugal, created by Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro (1857–1929), officially adopted by Portuguese government in June 30th 1911 (in use since about November 1910). Color shades matching the RGB values officially reccomended here.
