Missions højdepunkter

Det var den anden rumfærgemission udelukkende administreret af forsvarsministeriet (DOD (engelsk):Department of Defense). Lasten var klassificeret, men det meddeltes, at to satellitter (DSCS-III (engelsk):Defense Sattelite Communications System) opsendt til stationært kredsløb af et øvre rakettrin ((engelsk):Inertial Upper Stage) DSCS satellitterne benytter X-bånds ((engelsk):X-band) frekvenserne 8/7 Ghz. Hver af DSCS-III satellitterne er designet med en levetid på 10 år, men mange af DSCS satellitterne er stadig i kredsløb i dag og har i høj grad overskredet deres levetid, men fungerer stadig med gode resultater.

Space Shuttle Atlantis takes flight on its STS-27 mission on December 2, 1988, 9:30 a.m. EST, utilizing 375,000 pounds thrust produced by its three main engines. The STS-27 was the third classified mission dedicated to the Department of Defense (DoD). After completion of mission, Orbiter Atlantis landed December 6, 1988, 3:36 p.m. PST at Edwards Air Force Base, California.

STS-51-J Mission Insignia

The 51-J mission insignia, designed by Atlantis's first crew, pays tribute to the Statue of Liberty and the ideas it symbolizes. The historical gateway figure bears additional significance for Astronauts Karol J. Bobko, mission commander; and Ronald J. Grabe, pilot, both New York Natives.

STS-61A Mission Insignia
  • This insignia was chosen by the eight members of the STS-61A/D1 Spacelab mission to represent the record-sized Space Shuttle crew. Crewmembers surnames surround the colorful patch scene depicting Challenger carrying a long science module and an international crew from Europe and the United States.
