Russiske zarer

Den kejserlige krone fra 1762

En zar er en gammel slavisk herskertitel som første gang blev brugt om de Byzantinske kejsere i 913.[1] I 1453 faldt Konstantinopel til Osmannerne hvilket betyd at storfyrsten af Moskva Ivan 3. den store (som var gift med den sidste kejsers niece Sofja Palaiologina) udråbte sig selv til Cæsar som blev til Zar. I 1547 blev Ivan den Grusomme udråbt som zar over alle russere.[2]
