NEAR Shoemaker (Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous) er en sonde som den 17. februar 1996 20:43:27 UTC blev sendt ud for at undersøge 433 Eros som er en asteroide på 13 × 13 × 33 km. Den 14 februar 2000 gik NEAR i kredsløb om Eros og foretog senere flere manøvrer som medførte at dens bane og hastighed blev mindre, hvorefter den til sidst landede på asteroiden. NEAR er den første sonde der har landet på en asteroide, hvilket skete den 12 Februar 2001.
NEAR blev omdøbt til NEAR Shoemaker i 2000 for at hædre astrogeologen Eugene Shoemaker (1928-97) der var fortaler for NEAR-missionen.

- "This picture Gaspra is a combination of the highest-resolution images and color information obtained by the Galileo spacecraft. The Sun is shining from the right. The subtle color variations on Gaspra's surface have been exaggerated. en:Albedo and color variations are associated with surface en:topography. The bluish areas are regions of slightly higher albedo and tend to be associated with some of the crisper craters and with ridges. The slightly reddish areas, apparently concentrated in low areas, represent regions of somewhat lower albedo. In general, such patterns can be explained in terms of greater exposure of fresher rock in the brighter bluish areas and the accumulation of some en:regolith materials in the darker reddish areas. This mosaic of NEAR Shoemaker images, taken on December 3, 2000, from an orbital altitude of 200 kilometers (124 miles), provides an overview of the eastern part of the asteroid's southern hemisphere. In this view, south is to the top and the terminator (the imaginary line dividing day from night) lies near the equator. The conspicuous depression just above the center of the frame is the saddle-shaped feature Himeros.
This mosaic of NEAR Shoemaker images, taken on December 3, 2000, from an orbital altitude of 200 kilometers (124 miles), provides an overview of the eastern part of the asteroid's southern hemisphere. In this view, south is to the top and the terminator (the imaginary line dividing day from night) lies near the equator.
