Independent Spirit Awards blev grundlagt i 1984 under navnet FINDIE (Friend of Independents) Awards. Prisen man fik var en pyramide af akryl med snørrebånd indeni, et symbol på den usikre økonomi det var at producere independentfilm. Prisen skiftede navn i 1986 for bedre at vise at man satte pris på de talenter, der arbejdede kreativt udenfor det store studiomiljø. The Independent Spirit Awards bliver præsenter af Film Independent, en nonprofitorganisation, der arbejder med independantfilm og filmmagere.
Uddelingen bliver afholdt i forårsperioden i Californien, og vises på TV i USA.

ABOUT THE FILM INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS The Spirit Awards recognizes the achievements of American independent filmmakers and promotes the finest independent films of the year to a wider audience. The winners of the Spirit Awards are voted upon by Film Independent and IFP Members.
