An adult female whale, one of a group of five who stranded and died (with the exception of one juvenile, who was successfully refloated) on Sunset Beach at Port Waikato on 13 January 2011. They are believed to be Gray's beaked whales (Mesoplodon grayi), although DNA testing is required to confirm this. See e.g. Single whale survives stranding, Waikato Times, 13 January 2011. The end of this whale's beak was buried in the sand, so it was longer than it appears here.
