Carreg Cennen Castle. The first castle at Carreg Cennen would probably have been built by the Welsh Prince Rhys Ap Gryffydd in the 12th and 13th century. Though there is some evidence of Prehistoric and Roman occupation on the site. One legend suggests that the original fortress at Carreg Cennen dates back to the Dark Ages and the Welsh Knight Urien Rheged and his son Owain. Legend suggests they were knights during the reign of King Arthur. However, the existing remains date back to that period following the conquest of Wales by King Edward the First in the C14th. The initial conquest was followed by an extensive programme of castle building to consolidate his grip on this wild mountainous country. King Edward the first seized Carreg Cennen Castle in 1277 which was granted by the King to John Giffard who built the castle which remains today. The castle was eventually abandoned in 1462 following the Wars of the Roses at which time it was partially demolished by hundreds of men employed specifically to disable its effectiveness as a politically fortification.

Earthworks at Dingestow During its construction in 1182, Dingestow Castle was attacked by the Welsh and is thought to have been abandoned as no stonework has been found. There are two enclosures surrounded by ditches and a stream on the western side. View is looking across the ditch towards the vicarage, which is just visible behind the mound.

The circular keep of Dinefwr Castle It is not clear whether it was the Lord Rhys or his son Rhys Grug who embellished the original ditches with the first masonry curtain-wall in the second half of the 12th century. The great circular keep is dated about 1230 and may be assigned to Rhys Grug. The castle was later transferred to English control with the last major work occurring in 1326. The castle was abandoned in the 16th century. In the late 17th century a summer house was built on top of the keep but by the late 18th century the site was once again a ruin. The Dynevor family maintained the site throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, rebuilding fallen masonry and erecting safety rails.

Garrison Tower and sundial, Usk Castle One being considerably older than the other!
The tower is considered to be a military masterpiece. Constructed around 1209 in the French style by William, Earl of Pembroke, it formed part of the curtain wall and dominated the Usk valley. Round walls enabled defenders to fire in all directions, making the tower less vulnerable to damage from attack.
The castle is privately owned.(c) Peter Craine, CC BY-SA 2.0
Remains of Holt Castle. This was built in the 13th century following the conquest of North Wales by King Edward I. After playing a crucial part in the Civil war in the 17th c. it was partly demolished and the stones from the site were used to build Eaton Hall. The remains of the castle, shown above, are believed to be the inner courtyard. The building was also called Castle Lyons originally.

Twthill This is the site of the first castle in Rhuddlan, which was a motte and bailey castle raised by Robert of Rhuddlan in 1073. According to the Domesday book (1086), William the Conqueror granted him power over the whole of north Wales beyond the Clwyd for an annual rent of £40. On top of this mound, the "motte", there would have been a wooden stockade and tower.

Castell Pennard. There was a previous earth and wood ringwork castle here built early C12 which was superseded in late C13/early C14 by this stone castle. It commanded an excellent position on the edge of Pennard Pill and was matched by another on the opposite side of the valley, but the castle was inexpertly constructed for military defence. After only a hundred years or so it surrendered to a natural foe, the encroaching wind-borne sands. Legend tells that this was the result of the castle's Norman baron disrupting the revels of the Telwyth teg (fairy folk) down on the beach below.
