Photograph of a herbarium specimen taken through a dissecting microscope (x40), showing a dark brown to black, areolate thallus.
This specimen of Verrucaria nigrescens was growing on a serpentine rock along the stone road under the high voltage power lines about .25 mile S of the Red Dog Lodge and Serpentine Trail at the Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area, Owings Mills, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA.
