A Standard Missile roars off the forward launcher of the USS Thach (FFG 43) heading toward an incoming target drone during a missile test exercise in the South China Sea on Jan. 9, 1996. The Standard Missile used on the Oliver Hazard Perry Class Frigate is a SM-1 MR (medium range) surface-to-air or surface-to-surface missile that can be used against aircraft, ships and other missiles.
