Bronze statue of Spinoza, w:en:Zwanenburgwal, Amsterdam, with an incidental pigeon on his head and metal rose-ringed parakeets and sparrows on his metal cloak, as symbols for the tolerance of Amsterdam to immigrants. The statue was inaugurated on November 24, 2008 (the 376th birthday of Spinoza) by the mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen and Cultural Councillor Carolien Gehrels. Inscription at the oval dais of the base: "Het doel van de staat is de vrijheid", a quote from Spinoza's book Tractatus theologico-politicus (1670, 1677). (Translation: The purpose of the state is freedom.) The oval dais refers to elliptical planetary orbits. An icosahedron (polyhedron with 20 faces) is put next to Spinoza - not visible on this photograph.
