beskrivelse:
A lead cloth seal, probably 17th century in date. The seal bears a double-headed eagle in its centre, with upwardly curving spread wings. A circle separates the eagle from the inscription which reads: HEPERSEE[R] or [K]... (probably the name of a clothier). There are two dotted circles outside the inscription. The reverse is inscribed with GOV/DA, again within a dotted circle. This inscription identifies the seal with the city of Gouda in the Netherlands. Geoff Egan (Finds Adviser) has confirmed that this is the first cloth seal from Gouda to be recorded in Britain. It is evidence for Northumberland’s contribution to the important North Sea cloth trade, exporting wool and importing linens.
