, with one, two,three, or four strokes or raps. The raps are heard in thetable, and you feel the vibrations at the same time that youhear them,— sharp blows which make you think of electricshocks. It is superfluous to state that the feet of the me-dium do not touch those of the table, but are kept at a dis-tance from them. The medium next places her hands with ours upon thetable, and the taps heard in the table are stronger than inthe preceding case. These taps audible in the table, this typtology well The medium has her two feet wholly under my right foot, while atthe same time her knees are under my right hand. Her hands areupon the table grasped by my left hand and by that of the othercritical observer or control (controleur), who has just placed acushion before her to shield her very sensitive eyes from the flash ofthe magnesium light, and thus save her from a disagreeable nervousattack.
