698 Matthew. 699 As the cross was placed by the roadside, the mob from Jerusalem thatpassed by it wagged their head in derision at Jesus, and reviled or blas-phemed him, and told him that if he was the Son of God, he ought to showit, by coming down from the cross ! He was, indeed, soon to show that hewas the Son of God, but it would be in another way, after their malice wassatisfied, by rising from his tomb. The chief priests and scribes also unitedin mocking him, and said, if he would come down from the cross theywould believe him.
