beskrivelse:
Southern McMurdo Sound looking westward as seen from the freighter USNS Southern Cross at McMurdo Station. The prefabricated hut erected by the National Antarctic Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) adjacent to Winter Quarters Bay can be seen in the middleground. Explorer Robert Falcon Scott later used this hut for staging operations during his ill-fated expedition to the South Pole in 1911.

Vince's Cross, a wooden cross erected in 1902 to honor Seaman George T. Vince who drowned nearby is located immediately above the hut on a small knoll overlooking the bay. Our Lady of the Snows Shrine, a Madonna statue honoring Richard T. Williams, a Seabee tractor driver who drowned in 1956, is also nearby. Moreover, another monument is erected nearby to commemorate Raymond T. Smith, a Navy petty officer killed during a cargo operations aboard the USNS Southern Cross in February 1982.
