Map of the original Smeerenburg whaling settlement in Amsterdamøya Island, Svalbard (Norway). This Dutch settlement lasted 1617-1646. The warehouses (red) are denoted With the name of the city that owned them. The whare-oil ovens (green) are indicated With circles. Part of the settlement eventually was eroded away as the sea changed the configuration of the naze, and the most exposed buildings were probably torn away even in the 17th Century. Map produced by the uploader on powerpoint, based on research and map by professor L. Hacquebord, University of Groningen, Netherlands.
