"On 28 March 1977, within the framework of the 2nd meeting of the ACP/EEC Committee of Ambassadors, Donald Maitland, British Permanent Representative to the EC and President in office of the Council, Claude Cheysson, Member of the CEC in charge of Development, signed the accession of Sao Tome and Principe, Cape Verde and Papua New Guinea as the 50th, 51st and 52nd countries acceding to the Lomé Convention. The signing took place in the Charlermagne building in Brussels in the presence of Leonel Mário d'Alva, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sao Tome and Principe, Peter Dickson Donigi, Chargé d'Affaires at the Embassy of Papua New Guinea, and José Brito, Capeverdian Secretary of State for Cooperation and Planning."
