The map shows the complete circular single-stranded DNA genome (5386 bp) of Enterobacteria phage ΦX174 (accession NC_001422). This DNA genome was the first one ever sequenced (Fred Sanger and colleagues: 1977).

This genome contains 11 genes (A, A*, B-H, J, K). Genes B, K, E are overlapping with genes A, C, D.

Gene A* is nested within the larger A gene, with internal translation initiation in the same reading frame as gene A.
