Title page from Das hogheste Gotlansche Water recht (The Gotland/Wisby Sea Law), which was a collection of rules from three different sources, two from the Netherlands and one from Lübeck, Germany. Together they formed the basis for solving trade disputes in the Nordic countries and in the Baltic. The Wisby/Gotland connection apparently came from the origin of the handwritten document. Such manuscripts would be present in all the major ports, and would contain similar rules.
