Bernard's Castle, Barnard Castle The castle above the River Tees. Founded by Bernard (Barnard) Baliol in 1112, this Norman stronghold saw little action in its lifetime, and fell into disrepair when castles became redundant after the Middle Ages - much of the stonework being carted off for other buildings projects. A common enough tale.
