The pre-christian menhir close to the north wall of Avaldsnes Church is called Mary’s sewing needle. It is one of the tallest i Norway, 7.2 m. Its name is derived from a runic inscription ’’Mikjall Mariu næstr’’ (St. Michael is next in rank to St. Mary).

Local legend tells that Mary’s needle will touch the wall on the Day of
