In its most extendedsense, the art of developing and cultivat-ing the physical, intellectual, and moralfaculties. Physical education includes allthat relates to the organs of sensation andthe muscular and nervous system. Intel-lectual education develops and improvesthe powers of the understanding. Moraleducation comprehends the variousmodes of cultivating and regulating theaffections, and forming right ideas as tothe relation of man to man. In everypart of each branch of true educationthere should be a double end in view,namely, the increase of knowledge, andthe increase of skill. Each study maybe made the object of thought, or theobject of action; in the one case it ispursued as a science; in the other caseas an art.
