Gateway to the Danish government house at the former Danish settlement of Serampore (also called Frederiksnagore by the Danes) on the Hoogly River north of Calcutta. The pediment bears the monogram of Frederick VI (1808-1839).
The Danish government sold Denmark's two Indian settlements of Serampore (in Bengal) and Tranquebar (on the Coromandel Coast) to the British East India Company in 1845, only six years before this unique photograph was taken by Frederick Fiebig. Hand-coloured salt print, 1851
